It really did not matter to people that the treats were gluten-free and allergy-friendly. That is except to people like me who have celiac or food allergies or other conditions that prevent us from eating “regular” products. For us it’s a real find!

For others, they were delighted by the taste of the cookies, tea breads and fruit pies – that’s what they told us as they returned multiple times to buy more. We too are delighted by everyone’s feedback and comments and thank you for your support!

I am referring to the many customers we met recently at Clearwater Festival, Wooster Street Farmer’s Markets, Danbury Fair Mall Farmer’s Markets and Monroe’s Farmer’s Markets. We love meeting you and we thank you for your support and your purchases! Pictures to follow!

Last weekend we had a nice dinner with family for Mother’s Day. I bought the kids Doritos and my sister-in-law read the ingredients out loud. When’s the last time you read the ingredients? Check it out: whole corn, vegetable oil (corn, soybean and/or sunflower), salt, cheddar cheese, maltodextrin, wheat flour, whey, monosodium Glutamate (MSG), buttermilk solids, romano cheese from cow’s milk, whey protein concentrate, onion powder, partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oil, corn flour, disodium phosphate, lactose, natural and artifical flavor, dextrose, tomato powder, spices, lactic acid, artifical color including yellow 6, yello 5, red 40, citric acid, sugar, garlic powder, red and green bell pepper powder, sodium caseinate, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, nonfat milk solids, when protein isolate and corn syrup solids. That’s A LOT of ingredients and lots of artificial stuff.

During the week I purchased a bag of Terra Sweet Potato & Beets Chips. The ingredients in them are: A blend of sweet potatoes and beets, canola oil and/or safflower oil and/or sunflower oil.

So let’s see, that’s 40 ingredients including artificial colors and ingredients in the Doritos, and 3-5 ingredients and no artificial ingredients or colors in the sweet potato and beet chips, which by the way, were delicious. My kids and I especially liked the beet chips!

Rachael Ray gives out snacks to her audience every day. It used to be on air, now it is off air.

This week she will be giving out pouches of Gilbert’s Gourmet Goodies cookies! This is in response to audience members who have asked for gluten-free and allergy-friendly snacks. One of her producer’s children has food allergies and so she has helped to make this happen.

It is so important to raise awareness of the many conditions that require us to remove foods from our diets including wheat, gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, dairy, corn, corn syrup, eggs, hydrogenated oils, transfats, preservatives and more.

We are grateful that Rachael Ray and her producers are supporting and promoting this awareness with Gilbert’s Goodies cookies this week!

I’d like to ask you visualize a super brownie experience for me. Ready? Ok, close your eyes. Imagine you have a brownie on a plate in front of you. It looks great.

Imagine you are about to take a bite out of this brownie. First, you smell the deep rich chocolate smell. It smells really, really good.

You take your first bite. The crust has the slightest crunch to it. The inside is soft and moist, and has a really nice texture.

As you begin to chew you can taste them . . . the dark chocolate chips that are a surprise and a delight. Combined with the rich dark cocoa these chocolate chips make this a double chocolate experience.

Wow, that’s really good, you think. You grab a glass of milk (any type – cow, soy, rice, etc.) and you have a drink of nice cold milk with your brownie.

Open your eyes. You have just experienced your first Gilbert’s Goodies Gluten-Free, Allergy-Friendly Brownie.

Did you know that most commercial pies are made using premade commercial pie crusts and pie filling from a can? Unless the bakery, company, supermarket, orchard, restaurant, etc. tells you otherwise on the label, their pies are generally made this way. How else do you think that supermarkets, bakeries and stores can sell you a pie for just a few dollars? It’s much easier and much cheaper to make pies this way than to do the actual work of baking from scratch with all natural, premium ingredients.

Because any pie filling in a can has to be preserved it always contains high fructose corn syrup and other preservatives. Companies, bakeries, restaurants, supermarkets and other places that sell pies buy huge cans of pie filling at special box stores that cater to restaurants and food service organizations. Take a commercially made pie crust, fill it with ready-made pie filling from a can, bake it and voila – there’s a typical fruit pie in a typical store.

At Gilbert’s the holidays are our busiest time for pies. Our artisan pies are heavy, completely handmade, laden with fruit and taste delicious! We make our pie crusts using our own gluten-free flour mix. We use real sliced apples that we blend by hand into our own mixture of rice flour, sugar and cinnamon for the pie filling. Our crumb topping is made by hand using rice flour, brown sugar and non-hydrogenated palm oil. The pumpkin we use in our pumpkin pies does come out of a can in which the only ingredient is pumpkin. We do not use gluten, peanuts, nuts, corn or high fructose corn syrup in our pies.

We are thankful for our new and repeat customers and their testimonials such as “Your pies are part of our family tradition”. Our pies do cost more, since everything is made by hand and we use real fruit and natural ingredients. We think that they are worth the price and we believe that you will agree. We hope you have a wonderful thanksgiving and that you enjoy your food and your company!

I’m trying to bring awareness about celiac disease and food allergies to mainstream media via high profile women such as Rachael Ray, Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey, the ladies of The View and Faith Middleton. I sent them all gift baskets along with statistics about the numbers of people diagnosed with celiac disease (3 million+) and food allergies (12 millions+), the size of this market ($1.5 BILLION and GROWING at 28% a year!) in the US. So far Faith Middleton has responded but not so the others – not yet anyway. They have thousands if not millions of people in their audiences (on tv, on the internet, and readers) who are living with these issues and I think that they really should address them!

I’d welcome anyone/everyone contacting them to promote this important subject. I also love it if they would say something about me and Gilbert’s Goodies!

If you live in Connecticut, or the Northeast for that matter, you may have heard of the now famous Earth Day Celebration at New Morning Natural Market in Woodbury, CT which takes place every April at the store’s grounds. Thousands of people from around New England, New York and New Jersey flock to the store, rain or shine, to sample vendors’ products and walk the booths that have information about everything from climate change to composting to natural medecine and a petting zoo. There are raffles for many different gift baskets too. It’s a great, great event, lots of fun for adults and kids.
We vendors who attend give out thousands of samples to the public who get to taste lots of delicious natural and organic foods and treats. This year, in addition to my normal samples, I am going to make cut out cookies for people to see and taste. I want people to know that my cookie dough exists and that it’s sold at New Morning so if they like the cookies they know that they have a choice to buy them premade or make their own.
This year marks the 16th Earth Day Celebration at New Morning. It will take place on April 24 starting at 11:00 and goes until 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon. I hope you will come and if you do I hope you will stop by and sample our cookies!

I read labels, I mean I really read them. I study them. I have to know what is in a product to see if I can eat it or not since I have so many food allergies and sensitivities. It makes me mad when a product claims to be “all natural” but has high fructose corn syrup in it and/or (partially) hydrogenated oils. This is a common practice. I’ve also noticed that many gluten-free items use high-fructose corn syrup in some of their products and not in others. So they appear to be “all natural” but in reality some of their products are and others are not.
